Just being present
Oil on wood
16x30cm
This piece explores what it means to be completely present. It’s about those rare moments where the past fades away, the future no longer matters, and all that’s left is the experience of simply being. Everything feels softer, more colourful, almost dreamlike, as if the world is seen through emotion rather than perfect clarity.
Unlike much of my work, this painting wasn’t carefully planned. I began with a feeling, a colour palette and a loose idea, allowing the painting to unfold naturally rather than chasing a predetermined outcome. Letting go of control became part of the process itself, encouraging me to paint more instinctively and embrace uncertainty.
Turquoise became the heart of the piece. I’ve found myself continually drawn to the colour and the sense of calm, openness and nostalgia it evokes. I wanted it to become more than just a background colour; I wanted it to shape the atmosphere of the painting and interact naturally with the figure, creating a space that feels immersive rather than descriptive.
Ultimately, this work is about presence, freedom and surrendering to the process. It reflects the quiet peace that comes from letting go of expectations and allowing both the painting and yourself to simply exist in the moment.
